Big Alum Lake Association Meeting
August 16, 2014

The meeting was called to order at 10:00 AM.

The minutes of the July 5, 2014 meeting, which had been posted online and which were available at the meeting, were accepted.

Joel presented the Treasurer's Report. Income included dues, a web site ad, the Wine Tasting event, $1597.23 from the Town of Sturbridge for weed treatment, and interest. Expenses included mailings, a donation to St. Anne/St. Patrick, Boat Parade prizes, the Wine Tasting event, and $1597.00 transfer to a CD. There are two CD's at the Southbridge Credit Union and two at Southbridge Savings Bank. Joel said that the Association has a good amount in savings in the event of an emergency on the lake. The Treasurer's Report was accepted as read.

Joel explained that SLAC had applied to the Town for betterment funds for weed treatment and had received $1597.23 as Big Alum's percentage of the Town's $5000.00 allotment. This will continue every year as the SLAC members treat weeds in their lakes.

Committees:

Boating - Matt Kibbe noted that boating had been lighter than usual this summer. The island has been kept clean despite considerable daytime use. Joel said that someone had asked to stay overnight that weekend.

Dam - Ken Gajewski said that in accordance with our NOI, the dam will be opened on November 1, the water drawn down 30 inches, and the dam will be closed on January 1, 2015.

Environmental - Bruce Gran and Tracy Murphy had sent out a survey to the membership asking people to identify any problem weeds near their properties. The only concern expressed was about weeds in the cove near the late Mr. Taylor's property. Weeds near the dam have cleared up on their own.

Fishing - The State will stock the lake in the fall.

History - John Puffer noted that his volunteers have been contacting residents about contributing information and pictures of their properties. He would also like to hear any stories people may remember about the island, the dam, the pig farm, etc.

Membership - Through August 1, 2014, one hundred and twenty-one households have paid their dues for a total of $6025.00. Last year one hundred and forty-four members joined the Association so the Membership Committee will send out a reminder letter. The Committee is looking for someone to join the group and to handle Lots 124-172.

SLAC - A second boating safety course will be offered on Saturday, September 20 at the Southbridge Savings Bank on Rt. 20. There is no charge. The class is limited to fifty people. Check Big Alum's web site (www.bigalum.org) or the Mass. Environmental Police web site to register.

Water Quality Testing results are available. Big Alum has 20.5 ft. clarity, and the temperature at the deepest poinBig Alum Lake Association - Minutes July 1,2017t is 12 degrees Celsius.

Nominations - Paul Lamarine read the nominations for 2014-2015: President - Joel Casaubon, Vice President - Andi Cropley, Treasurer - Janet Garon, Secretary/Clerk - Barbara LaRochelle, Corresponding Secretary - Pat Howard. The slate of officers was approved by unanimous vote.

Old Business - LogoUp.com is the source of BALA tee shirts, bags, hats, etc. There is a link on the web site directly to Logo Up with instructions for putting the BALA logo on clothing and accessories.

The three PAL events on the lake were enjoyable for all who attended and the Association plans to hold them again next summer. The Wine Tasting was well-received too and netted $189.00 for the treasury.

Alan Peppel of 94 Paradise Lane was welcomed as a new member of the Association.

Scott Sanderson offered to get information on State grants for watershed surveys.

A resident had complained to Joel about loud music at one of her neighbors' houses. Joel had written a letter to the people but pointed out that it is not the Association's responsibility to deal with complaints like that.

The meeting adjourned at 10:32 AM.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara LaRochelle,
Secretary
